Site Build It Answers
Blog or Build?
Build Both... a Blog and a Business Website
"Blog or Build" one of the most asked questions by my clients, next to "what is the best blog software and blogging tools".
Now when my clients ask me this question I inevitably respond with " have you got some time to discuss it?"
By virtue of the fact that you are reading this page I'll take your answer as a yes. Also bear in mind that I specialize in home and small business websites so if your interest is non-business oriented you may not find the information you are looking for here
OK here we go....Best blog software and Blogging Tools
What is blogging, exactly? Blogging simply stated is just a different way to build a Web site.
Its content is organized by the date and time of its "posts," which are what blogs call "Web pages" WordPress and TypePad are noted as the best blog software and made blogging become very popular, but it was not just the blogging itself. It was a technology called "RSS" which enables visitors to subscribe to your latest blog post that caused all the enthusiasm.
Blogs are primarily designed around your most recent post and it should be noted that few people will read more than that. RSS alerts followers when you make your latest post. It is critical for blogging that your subscribers be alerted of your latest post.
RSS is not blogging but it is an excellent technology that rapidly disperses your latest blog posts to both Search Engines and visitors.
With that being said the primary objective when starting a blog or website business is to generate large volumes targeted traffic to ultimately make sales for your products and or services
Recent statistics prove that up to 99% of small online business fails whether built as a blog or a website. The reason for the failure lies in lack of traffic.
No Traffic = No Business
The bottom line remains for both. Now ask yourself this question… when you do a search how many blogs are listed as opposed to websites?
Although there are more blogs than Theme-Based websites you may have noticed when you search Google for information, you rarely find a blog.
You always find a Web site.
Search engines deliver relevant pages from websites that are based on the topic or “niche” related to your search. You seldom find blogs because Google knows that you are likely searching for detailed information, not just the latest few paragraphs written by a blogger
If the search is more "timely or topical" in nature, Google may insert a blog post somewhere in the Top 10 of its search results.
To search blogs extensively, people must use blogsearch.google.com which is Google's blogging search engine. Most people are unaware of this fact and actually the statistics indicate that only 0.2% of Google's traffic use that method
In the same way that Google may insert a blog into its "regular" search results if a search was time-sensitive, it may insert a Twitter "tweet" into its search results if a search was particularly "now." These tend to disappear over time because they lose their time-relevance.
To build an online business, go where the money is. When people search for information, they want Theme-Based Content Sites, not your latest blogging thought and not your latest 140-character tweet. That's why you find more pages from Web sites when you search for information on Google. Information is the driving force of the internet
Blogs are best used for news-oriented sites, or sites that feature "the latest" or "the thought of the day."
If you intend to build a site that keeps visitors on the news for your topic or niche then blogs are a good choice.. But driving large volumes of targeted traffic to a blog is very difficult
Only a small number of people have the time and the talent to achieve this. Now for individuals who are serious about making money with their small business and in particular my business clients I always recommend that they do both.
